WorkBook and Idea Factory
The Katherine E. Nash Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition titled WorkBook and a companion exhibition titled Idea Factory. These exhibitions open June 17 and run through July 11, 2008. A public reception is scheduled for Friday, June 20 from 6-8:30 pm. All events at the Nash are free and open to the general public.
The Regis Center for Art is located at 405 21st Avenue South on the west bank campus of the University of Minnesota. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am – 7 pm. Parking is available in the 21st Avenue Ramp.
The Dept. of Art at the University of Minnesota, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and the Dept. of Art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, worked together creating what promises to be most interesting and challenging exhibitions. Curators are Clarence Morgan, professor & chair, U of M; Karen Wirth, professor & Chair of Fine Arts at MCAD; and Derrick Buisch, professor & Graduate Chair, UW Madison.
WorkBook will feature sketchbooks, notebooks, process books by faculty and other guest artists. Idea Factory is a companion exhibition of student work illustrating the importance of sketchbooks in studio-based disciplines.
Karen Wirth notes that the sketchbook is a place to explore old ideas and a place of revelation as new ideas develop. It is a place to experiment and try out those new ideas risk-free. Thoughts are unraveled, doubt is expressed, and artwork is invented. It is a place of paying attention. It is also a visual archive that supports a larger career: a record of the evolution of style and subject matter, an index of recurring themes that appear and disappear or mutate, and evidence of creative activity.
Clarence Morgan has kept commonplace books for more than 35 years. He describes them as repositories for random thoughts and impressions that have no place to go. Thinking is messy. Logic or illogic is unpredictable – it depends on wayward thinking. Inconsistency is my buddy, randomness is my cousin, awkwardness is my second cousin.
Derrrick Buisch describes a sketchbook as an active site . . .a place for invention, sketching, reflecting and inventorying. The books show a raw and unmediated look at note taking and forming information.
Without a doubt, WorkBook and Idea Factory will be one of the most unique attractions in the Twin Cities summer exhibition scene.
