In an effort to reconnect the watercolor community and the academic community, curator Margaret B. Bussey has invited regional artists using watercolor as a primary medium to show together at the Nash Gallery. No show of this sort has been mounted at the gallery since the inauguration of the new Regis Center facility. Students and lovers of watercolor, and of painting in general, will welcome the opportunity to see together works of nationally acknowledged masters, members of area watercolor societies, and area college-level art teachers. Visual approaches range from traditional landscapes, still life and figurative work to abstraction, and post-modern narrative. Color is used in a variety of sensitive and powerful ways. The work shows a high level of intelligence and engagement with both the everyday and the imaginary world.
In selecting work from the collection of the Weisman Museum to accompany these contemporary artists, Bussey looked for artists using watermedia in a variety of ways, ones reflecting the history of watercolor and gouache (opaque watercolor) as a medium. Another thread she followed is the sense of an unbroken line of artists and teachers extending through the University’s history, spotting work of some of the previous faculty members at the University, including Katherine E. Nash herself. Also included are examples from the 2Oth century modernists such as Alfred Maurer, Max Weber, and Malcolm Myers.
Margaret B. Bussey is an artist and active participant in the Twin Cities art scene. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota and Anoka Ramsey Community College.
